£20m Allocated For Roads Maintenance
Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has said the majority of the £20m allocated to his department by Finance Minister Simon Hamilton in the January monitoring round will be spent on roads maintenance.
£3m is to be used to help deliver improvements to bus stations and workshops, for constructing crash barriers and for cycling.
Minister Kennedy said: "My department is responsible for maintaining 25,900 kilometres of public roads which can only be done through significant investment.
"This additional funding will target structural maintenance on the local road network to help address the significant backlog and reduce the actual resurfacing cycles. It will also provide new drainage, some reconstruction and the resurfacing of around 160 kilometres of road.
"Today's announcement is a welcome boost for the public and the construction industry. Carrying out road improvements sustains hundreds of jobs every year and ensures the travelling public enjoy safer and more enjoyable journeys."

Two Decades To 'Right Roads'
There has been a warning that it might take as long as 20 years to clear an alleged backlog of underfunding and get NI roadways 'fit for purpose'. The claim comes as it was revealed that a third of Northern Ireland's road maintenance budget last year was spent simply on patching up potholes instead of improving the condition of the roads.

The figure was revealed by Deputy Divisional Roads Manager, Tom McCourt as he presented DRD Roads Service’s autumn report to Newtownabbey Borough Council.
