Man Arrested Over City Hall Flag Stunt

A man has been arrested in Belfast city centre after climbing on top of a gate post at City Hall with a union flag while allegedly shouting "no surrender".

The stunt attracted a lot of attention on the social networking site Twitter, before the man was arrested.

Police received a complaint that a male was behaving in a disorderly fashion in the Donegall Place area of Belfast at about 13:45 this afternoon.

The 21-year-old man eventually came down at about 14:30 and was arrested.

Another 17-year-old male was arrested in relation to a public order offence that had occurred when the man was on the pillar.

The stunt is one in a series of 'flag protests' that have occurred since 3 December 2012, when Belfast City Council voted to restrict the number of days the union flag could be flown on top of City Hall.
