'Hate Crime' Attack On Belfast House

Police are treating an attack on a house in north Belfast as a 'hate crime', it has been revealed.

A man has reported that the windows of his house in the Deacon Street area were smashed at around 02:00 in the early hours on Sunday morning.

The man and several children were in the property at the time but were not injured.

SDLP Councillor and Chair of the North Belfast Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Pat Convery, said: "This needless and wanton attack on the property of a Polish family in the Deacon Street area is utterly unjustifiable.

"This must have been a very frightening experience for the family concerned and I have no doubt the wider community will rally behind them.

"Those behind such a cruel and reckless attack have nothing positive to offer those living in the area."

Local DUP Councillor Guy Spence added: "It's came as a great shock to the local community. This is something that the community don't want to see. For windows to be smashed on this street, incidents like this don't welcome young families into the community and undermine any efforts we try and make.

"I would encourage anyone with information to contact police as soon as possible."

Police have asked anyone who may have any information to contact them at York Road.
