NI Colleges' Industrial Relations Under Scrutiny

Industrial relations in Northern Ireland's colleges are not fit for purpose and require updating, according to a report by Sir Robert Salisbury on behalf of Colleges Northern Ireland (CNI).

The independent review of the industrial relations framework within the further education sector in Northern Ireland was conducted across 2013 and 2014, with the aim of recommending a framework that is "fit for purpose, flexible and supportive of the needs of College employers, staff and NI business and industry."

Sir Robert Salisbury consulted widely with key stakeholders including representatives from Colleges, Trade Unions and Government.

The report details 17 recommendations for modernising the industrial relations framework within the FE sector.

Gerard Campbell, Chief Executive of Colleges Northern Ireland (CNI), said: "It is clear that present structures require updating and revision to ensure that they are reflective of the modern business and learning environment within which colleges operate. The new framework presents a positive opportunity to establish a modern industrial relations approach which reflects the strategic role that colleges play within business, industry and in supporting learners."

NIPSA Deputy General Secretary Alison Millar said: "While NIPSA welcomes publication of the long awaited report carried out by Sir Robert Salisbury, there are issues over which NIPSA has some concerns. However before responding on the 17 recommendations NIPSA will be considering this in consultation with our representatives."
