Equal Opportunities Must Be Available To Women, Say Sinn Fein

Women must have equal opportunities and access to chosen career paths, Sinn Féin's Jennifer McCann has said.

Speaking at the Women's TEC Annual Awards Ceremony today the Junior Minister said: "Despite all the laws to stop discrimination against women in the workplace, women still face many barriers in their chosen career paths due to gender inequalities.

"Community-based organisations have played a positive role in supporting and encouraging women to participate in training with the potential to lead to employment in traditionally male-dominated sectors."

The MLA said that women "must not be put off certain careers or jobs", adding that they "must have equal opportunities and access to whatever career they choose and we all have a role in ensuring that there are no jobs women and girls can't do if they want to."

She said that it was important that women support and encourage other women by being positive role models [and] inspiring others to believe in themselves and follow their dreams.
