£2m road improvements set for North Down
Almost £2 million is to be spent on improving road's in North Down over the coming year.
Divisional Roads Manager Joe Drew said the investment would help in the introduction safety measures on the A2 Belfast to Bangor Road, including high visibility speed limits marked on the carriageway and the provision of high friction surfacing at Ballyrobert Road. A refuge island will also be provided at the roundabout at Castle Park Avenue / Abbey Street."
Mr Drew said: "In the last financial year we invested an all time high of £64 million in maintaining the surfaces and structures of Northern Ireland’s roads. I’m pleased we will improve on that again this year by spending almost £70 million, which is not far off the £75 million envisaged by the Regional Transportation Strategy.
"Just a couple of years ago, the average spend was £45 million which is an indication of how far we have come – although there is still a long way to go."
Mr Drew also revealed that the road widening scheme at Whinney Hill, which will provide a £6.5 million carriageway from its junction with Ballygrainey Road to the Water Service Reservoir towards Craigantlet, is now substantially complete.
Road improvement schemes are also complete at A2/ Rathgael Road / Old Belfast Road and there are also plans for local transport and safety measures on the A2 Belfast to Bangor Road and Castle Park Avenue at Abbey Street.
