Work To Begin On Shared Sports Facilities In North Belfast

Work is due to begin next work on the construction of new leisure and community facilities on the site of the former Girdwood Army barracks in north Belfast.

The facilities are being built as part of £20m redevelopment and will include a shared sports pitch accommodating rugby, football and Gaelic sports, and is backed by EU peace funding.

News of the work was announced by Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland and Belfast City Council.

Welcoming the news, Minister McCausland said: "We worked very closely with local communities and local elected representatives over a period of time.

"There was a lot of discussion, negotiation, consultation, in fact several years of work went into getting the agreed vision for Girdwood, but we did achieve it in the end.

"When I came into the department I made it a priority, we achieved it and I'm delighted about it."
