DoE steps in to save listed building

The DoE has, for the first time, invoked powers which enable it to secure the future of a listed building in Co Tyrone.

The owner of the Stable Block in Sion Mills, Strabane, who has been served a Repairs Notice, will now have to carry out necessary works to preserve the building. If the owner does not, the DoE has the authority to acquire the building by compulsory means.

Commenting on the move, NIO Minister Angela Smith said: "The Repairs Notice served on the owner of the listed Stable Block in Sion Mills is the first case of its kind, and the first time that these statutory powers have been used in Northern Ireland.

“The powers – referred to as a ‘Repairs Notice’ - require the owner to carry out specific works to preserve their building, within a reasonable timescale, otherwise the department may acquire it by compulsory means.

"The aim of issuing such a notice is to ensure that the necessary work is carried out. If the work is not undertaken, then the DOE will move to acquire the property."

The Minister confirmed that her department would be continuing to look towards similar cases over the coming months and advised owners in comparable positions to get in contact with the DoE for advice and guidance.

Grant aid is currently available for eligible projects after an extra £1 million was secured by the minister over the next few years for such schemes.
