Man In 70s Struck With Hammer During Burglary
A man in his 70s has been struck with a hammer during a burglary at his house in Ballynahinch, County Down.
Detectives in Downpatrick are appealing for information following the burglary, which occurred on the evening of Thursday 8 May.
It is reported that three men, armed with hammers, entered a house in the Crossgar Road area of the town at approximately 11:30. The residents were a man aged in his 70s and a woman aged in her 60s.
The man was injured after being struck by a hammer and was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.
It is believed that the three men, who were wearing masks and gloves, left with some jewellery at approximately 01:30.
Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact CID in Downpatrick Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.
Woman Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
A woman has been convicted at Downpatrick Crown court for claiming benefits she was not entitled to.
48-year-old Arlene O’Connor of Drumaness Road, Drumaness claimed Rates and Income Support totalling £69,373 while failing to declare she was claiming benefits abroad. She was given a 12 month prison sentence suspended for two years.
She will also have to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
£174k Cannabis Seized In Pomeroy
PSNI Officers from Dungannon’s Tactical Crime Team have uncovered a cannabis factory housing plants thought to be worth £174,000 in the Loughbracken Road area of Pomeroy, County Tyrone, on Wednesday 7 May. Cannabis plants were seized along with growing equipment during a planned search at the property.
Chief Inspector Jane Humphries, Area Commander said: "Drugs are clearly an issue of concern to the local community and officers have been working hard in this area to tackle the issue of drug supply and distribution. This planned search and the discovery of a cannabis factory illustrates our commitment to deal with drugs in this area.
"I would appeal to anyone who has any information in relation to illegal drugs, to contact local police on the new non-emergency number 101 or, alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
PRONI To Close Early
PRONI, the Public Record Office based in Belfast's Titanic Quarter, is to close at 15:00 today for the Giro d'Italia Big Start 2014.
The Giro d'Italia cycle race will begin in Belfast's Titanic Quarter on 9 and 10 May.
Traffic disruption is anticipated around the Titanic Quarter area on Friday 9 May. It is recommended that anyone who wishes to visit PRONI make use of public transport. PRONI is a 10-15 minute walk from Titanic Quarter Railway Station, and is also accessible from the city centre by Metro Bus 26.
PRONI will reopen as normal on Monday 12 May.

Fire At Titanic Quarter Flats
Emergency Services have been called in to deal with a fire at a block of flats in Belfast's Titanic quarter. According to a report by UTV the blaze broke out just after 1.30pm this afternoon. The flats are located in the Queen's Road area, close to the Odyssey Arena. Six fire engines and emergency teams are currently at the scene.

NI Sees Increase In House Purchase Loans
Northern Ireland was the only area of the UK to experience an increase in house purchase loans in the final quarter of 2011, according to new figures released today from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) in Northern Ireland. The 2,500 house purchase loans, worth £240 million, increased 4% by number and value from the third quarter of the year.

A new special publication has been launched by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) to mark the end of its centenary year. 'PRONI 100 Treasures' features a selection of 100 fascinating documents, dating from 1219 to the present day. It documents the interesting and important items which now form part of the public record.
