HGV Levy Barrier To Cross-Border Trade

The Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) levy has been critised as a barrier to cross-border trade.

Speaking following an Assembly debate on a motion on the issue, Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff said: "The HGV levy, which was imposed by Westminster, acts as a barrier to north/south mobility and trade.

"It is ill-thought out and does not fit the particular circumstances of the island of Ireland. In fact it violates the spirit of north/south co-operation.

"It needs to be overturned for the benefit of hauliers throughout Ireland.

"The minister of the environment's emphasis in the debate was on HGV traffic on the A5.

“While that is welcome, I would like to see it taken further for an exception for all roads in the North."
