Giants future secured following creditor agreement

The Harp Lager Belfast Giants breathed a sigh of relief today after it was announced that the team would be able to continue next year.

Following a meeting of creditors this morning, a settlement plan was agreed in which 20p in the pound was agreed to be paid to dozens of businesses and individuals owed money.

Nearly two weeks ago it was revealed that the Giants were being pulled down by debts believed to be in the region of £1.4 million.

Speaking following today's meeting, Giants Managing Director Albert Maasland said: “I am naturally pleased that the team will continue to bring enjoyment to the people of Northern Ireland and add huge social and financial benefit to the local economy.

"It has saddened me greatly that we have been forced to approach our creditors for their support and I am deeply grateful for their continued backing which has been demonstrated today.

"We will immediately be putting in place the framework to provide strong business foundations to support the team, the fans, sponsors and our business partners.”

Mr Maasland confirmed that next season's fixture list would be announced enabling fans to buy season tickets for the new ice hockey Elite League.
