US Firm Buys NI's Largest Independent Insurance Broker

Northern Ireland's largest independent insurance broker has been bought by US firm Liberty Mutual.

Newtownards-based Hughes Insurance has been acquired by the US company, who already owns the former Quinn Direct insurance business.

Hughes was formed in 1977 and employs over 300 people.

It is understood that Hughes will continue to operate as a stand-alone business, with all policies remaining valid.

Co Antrim firm fined following construction site death
A Co Antrim building firm have been prosecuted following the death of a construction worker at a site in Coleraine in 2001. J. Kennedy and Co (Contractors) Ltd were fined £25,000 following the incident in which during a lifting operation a bale of steel reinforcing mesh fell on top of two workers at a building site in Coleraine.

County Armagh Haulage Firm Shuts
Noel Zwecker International Transport, based on the outskirts of Armagh, has closed. More than 50 jobs have gone as a result. The family-run haulage firm blamed increased fuel costs and the economic downturn.

PwC To Create 600 Jobs In NI
Professional services company PwC is set to create 600 new jobs in Northern Ireland over the next five years. The Department for the Economy has collaborated with Belfast Met, Ulster University (UU) and PwC to introduce the £4.4 million training programme of skills academies. The initiatives will be delivered by Belfast Met and the university.

Car Insurance Premiums Set To Soar
The Ministry of Justice has announced a new way of calculating compensation payments which could see average car insurance premiums soar by up to £75 a year. Lord Chancellor Liz Truss announced plans to cut the discount rate to -0.75% from 2.5%.

Concerns grow over insurance costs for businesses
Business leaders and politicians have backed calls for an urgent assessment of the rising cost of business insurance. The Federation of Small Businesses say that small businesses are facing 500% increases in their insurance bills as the cost of premiums rocket.
