Approval Granted For Altnagelvin Hospital Car Park

Planning approval has been granted for a multi-storey car park and ground level car park at Altnagelvin Area Hospital in L'Derry.

The multi-storey car park will be three storeys high and constructed on the site of the existing outpatients' car park.

A total of 314 spaces will be provided, 293 of which are within the multi-storey car park and 21 in the ground level car park.

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan, who announced the planning approval, said: "This is good news for people in Derry. It will be an important project that will help deliver the redevelopment programme at Altnagelvin Area Hospital whilst maintaining car parking numbers for patients, visitors and staff.

"The construction of the new multi storey car park is part of the Altnagelvin redevelopment programme. This includes the development of the new radiotherapy unit which was granted planning permission in March 2013."

Health Minister Edwin Poots welcomed the news saying: "The new multi-story car park is a key part of the Altnagelvin redevelopment programme.

"It will provide much-needed parking facilities for patients and families and is an essential enabling works project in advance of the next phase of the site development, consisting of the construction of six new 24-bed wards and a new main entrance.

"This is welcome news for all the communities served by the Western Trust. I expect building work to begin on the car park development imminently."
