Lung Cancer Is NI's Biggest Killer – Report

More action need to be taken to raise awareness in tackling lung cancer in Northern Ireland.

That is according to a new report by campaign group, the UK Lung Cancer Coalition (UKLCC).

The group said that lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer in the region, and is responsible for more than one in four deaths. Around 2,000 in Northern Ireland are living with lung cancer, it added.

Currently, there is only a one in 10 chance that a patient will still be alive five years after a diagnosis, which is one of the poorest rates in Europe; while there are 58 deaths per 100,000 in NI to the disease, compared to the national average of 40 per 100,000.

In order to raise awareness of the disease, the UKLCC has called for more education on the early signs of the condition, which could help to improve survival rates, as could awareness campaigns.

Dr Wendy Anderson, from UKLCC, is quoted as saying: "Despite a decline in the number of deaths from lung cancer over the last 20 years, outcomes for lung cancer patients remain poor in Northern Ireland compared to other European countries.

"As a result, more should be done to alert people to the signs and symptoms of this devastating disease in order to ensure earlier diagnosis and increase chances of survival.

"We know if we apply the best standards of care already being demonstrated in some parts of Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, and if we diagnose people earlier, we can double one-year and five-year lung cancer survival rates."
