Garth Brooks Gigs Cancelled

All five Garth Brooks shows set for Dublin's Croke Park stadium have now been cancelled, it has been confirmed.

The US country singer sold 400,000 tickets for five shows in Dublin, but they will now not go ahead.

Dublin City Council had previously granted a licence for three shows at Croke Park, but said that the other two could not go ahead. The City Council had received complaints from residents over the number of concerts being held at the GAA stadium.

A comprise was suggested, which would have involved Mr Brooks playing two matinee shows to accommodate all the ticket-buyers, but this also was rejected. The singer said that only playing three shows would be like having to choose one child over another.

"I just received the news the Irish council cannot change their earlier ruling to not allow the licenses for all five shows," Mr Brooks said in a statement.

"To say I am crushed is an understatement. All I see is my mother's face and I hear her voice. She always said things happen for a reason and for the right reason. As hard as I try, I cannot see the light on this one. So it is with a broken heart, I announce the ticket refunds for the event will go as posted by TicketMaster."

The city's businesses have said the cancellation is expected to cost around €50m in lost business.

Ticket refunds are to go begin at 09:00 on Thursday.
