Five Die On NI's Roads Over The Weekend

Five people have died on Northern Ireland's roads this weekend, police have said.

On Saturday, two people were killed in a road traffic collision in Newry, Co Down. The two-vehicle crash occurred on the Dublin Road in the city at around 5.25pm.

The victims have been named as 19-year-old Niall Murphy, who was from Newry, and 67-year-old Joan Connor who was from Drogheda in Co Louth. Mr Murphy was the driver of a blue Ford Fiesta, while Mrs Connor is understood to have been a passenger in a brown Nissan Qashqai when they collided.

Mr Murphy died at the scene. Mrs Connor was taken to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead. Anyone who witnessed the collision has been asked to contact police.

On Friday (1 August), a man died in hospital after sustaining injuries from a car crash in Loughgall, Co Armagh, earlier in the week, while in a separate incident on the same day, two soldiers died in Cullybackey, Co Antrim, after the car they were travelling in collided with a tractor.

To date, a total of 48 people have died on Northern Ireland's roads this year.

Motorist killed in collision near Banbridge
One person has been killed following a serious road traffic incident on the A1, two miles outside Banbridge. It is understood that a man, who has not yet been named, was taken to hospital with serious injuries following a collision between a lorry and a car at around 7.00am. The man later died in hospital.

Sixty-eight people lost their lives on Northern Ireland's roads in 2024, according to provisional figures released by the PSNI today. This represents a slight decrease from 2023, when 71 people died in road traffic collisions. Infrastructure Minister John O'Dowd reminded the public of their shared responsibility for road safety.

55 People Died On NI Roads In 2019
Some 55 people lost their lives on Northern Ireland's roads last year, it's been revealed. The figure comes as the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service joins other authorities in pleading for safer driving throughout 2020. Last year, the service attended 755 collisions and rescued 544 people.

125 people died on NI roads in 2006
A total of 125 people have been killed on Northern Ireland's roads in 2006 – 10 less than last year, according to provisional figures released today. Road Safety Minister David Cairns said: “Each death on our roads is needless and tragic. I find it particularly sad that 34 young people under the age of 21 died on our roads in 2006.

Roads Service to spend £6M on improvements
