Shipquay Street Premises Granted Planning Approval

Derry City Council has ratified planning approval for the redevelopment of a commercial premises in the city's Shipquay Street.

The former Gino's retail store is to be renovated and plans include a new cafe/restaurant to the front of the property and a bar to the rear.

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan said: "This is a real boost for Shipquay Street. I very much welcome Derry City Council's backing for the re-use of a vacant property which lies within the Historic City Conservation Area.

"This project will inject investment into the Historic City whilst bringing a vacant property back into use and adding to the vitality and viability of the city centre. What I am about is a better environment and stronger economy. This decision will help that."

£125k Resurfacing Scheme To Begin In Ballymoney

A £125,000 major resurfacing scheme is to begin on the Benvarden Road, Ballybogey in Ballymoney, County Antrim.

The work is due to begin on Monday 11 August 2014, from Ballybogey Road Eastwards for approximately 1.2km to near U62 Conagher Road.

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said: "This scheme will greatly improve the strength and surface quality of the carriageway on part of this important road."

Woman Arrested Over £100k Drugs Seizure

A woman has been arrested in south Belfast following the seizure of drugs thought to be worth over £100,000.

The arrest follows a police raid on Agra Street, just off the Ormeau Road on Wednesday evening.

A 26-year-old woman was arrested for possession of Class A Drugs with intent to supply and possession of Class B Drugs with intent to supply.

She has been released on police bail.

Newtownards Fire Was 'Arson'

A fire at a building in Newtownards, County Down has been confirmed as arson, according to police.

The fire broke out at the Ann Street property on Wednesday at 23:30 and was dealt with by the NI Fire and Rescue service.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area to contact them.

Road Works To Get Started In Belfast
The Department for Regional Development will start work on a number of junction improvements in Belfast city centre next week. The improvements on Grosvenor Road/Durham Street and Hope Street/Great Victoria Street are part of the Belfast On The Move Transport Masterplan which will give higher priority to public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.

Former ‘Drugs Tsar’ to deliver City Hall seminar
Keith Hellawell, the former UK government ‘drugs tsar’ will be the keynote speaker at a forthcoming seminar about the impact changes in the legislation relating to drugs classification at Belfast City Hall. Mr Hellawell famously resigned his position in June 2002, in protest at the government’s stance on changes in drugs legislation.

Man Arrested Following Drugs Seizure In Lisburn
A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a suspected drugs seizure, worth an estimated value of £150,000, in Lisburn. A suspected firearm was also seized during a house search in the Ballynahinch Road area.
