£14m Film Studios Announced For Belfast

Two new film studios at a cost of £14m are to be built in Belfast, the Department of the Environment has announced.

Planning approval has been granted for the new studios, which will expand on the existing facilities in the city's Titanic Quarter, where the HBO fantasy drama Game Of Thrones is filmed.

The studios will provide an extra 100,000 square feet of space, almost doubling the existing production area at Titanic Studios, which incorporates Harland and Wolff shipyard's former paint hall building.

The application is for two film studios, film production workshops, additional film production uses, installation of a roof mounted solar panel system, car parking plus access and site works.

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan said: "This planning application for two film studios and supporting facilities would if constructed, put Belfast on the map as one of Europe's largest film production locations.

"The use of sustainable technology with the roof mounted solar panel system is also to be welcomed. These photovoltaic roof mounted panels convert solar radiation into electricity which reduces costs – a win-win for business and the environment. Developments like this are leading the way in helping Northern Ireland move towards a low carbon economy."
