Youth Unemployment Rises

The unemployment rate for 18-24 year-olds in Northern Ireland has risen 1.2% over the year to 20%, according to the latest labour market figures from the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA). The UK average is 14.9%.

The Northern Ireland unemployment rate was estimated at 6.6% for the period May - July 2014, showing a fall of 0.3% from the previous quarter and 0.3% from the rate recorded a year ago.

The Northern Ireland unemployment rate was above the UK average rate of 6.2%, which is down 0.4% over the quarter and 1.5% over the year. The NI rate was also lower than the European Union at 10.2% and Republic of Ireland at 11.8% during June 2014.

Estimates for May - July 2014 show that 51.8% of those unemployed in Northern Ireland have been unemployed for one year or more, but the number is down 4.0% from one year ago.

The number of people claiming unemployment related benefits stood at 52,200 in August 2014, down 600 from the revised figure for the previous month. This is the 20th consecutive month in which there has been a fall.

Drop In Number Of People Claiming Unemployment Benefits
The number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Northern Ireland has dropped, according to new figures. The unemployment rate was 5.9% between March and May this year, a decrease of 0.4% over the year. The latest Labour Force Survey revealed in June the number of unemployment claimants stood at 36,700, a decrease of 600 over the month.

The latest figures show that the number of jobs in Northern Ireland rose to the highest figure on record in March 2008. The unemployment rate has decreased over the quarter (February-April 2008) and remains below the UK average.

Unemployment was estimated at 7.3% for the period July - September 2013, indicating a 0.2% fall from the previous quarter and a 0.4% drop from a year ago.
