Majority Of Young People Engage In Arts

The majority of young people in Northern Ireland participated in arts activities (76%) and attended an arts event (88%) in 2013, according to new figures released by the Department of Culture.

The most popular arts activity was 'Painting, drawing, sculpture or printmaking' at 35%, while the most popular arts event was the cinema (78%).

96% of all young people played sport within the last week and a high proportion attended a sport match in the last year (69%).

72% of young people visited a museum/science centre in 2013, compared with 65% in 2010. 57% of all young people had used the public library service in the last year.

Three Charged In Banbridge Drugs Op.

Three people have been charged following a major drugs operation in Banbridge, County Down.

Two men aged 28 and 44 and a 43-year old woman have been arrested.

The charges for all three include supplying and possessing both Class B and Class C drugs, common assault and threats to damage property.

The men are due to appear before Banbridge Magistrates' Court on 9 October, while the woman has been released pending investigation.

Woman Assaulted After Taxi Journey

It has been reported that a 19-year-old woman was assaulted after taking a taxi in south Belfast.

The woman got into the taxi outside a pub in the Lower Crescent area at 01:30 in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police said another male passenger had been in the taxi with the woman but was dropped off before the attack took place.

The taxi then drove to the Carr Road in Lisburn. The alleged assault then took place at 03:40.

Arrest Over £60k Drugs Find

Police have stopped a car, arrested a man and uncovered £60k worth of drugs in L'Derry.

Officers searched the vehicle in the Ballymagroarty area of the city on Wednesday afternoon.

Police found suspected herbal cannabis. The driver, 23-year-old man, was detained at the scene on suspicion of possession of class B drugs and possession of class B drugs with intent to supply.

110 Drug Deaths Last Year In NI
About 110 people died last year as a result of the misuse of both illegal and legal drugs, according to Health Minister Edwin Poots. This was the message from the Health Minister following a meeting with the PSNI and community organisations. The meeting followed the unexplained deaths of eight people across Northern Ireland recently.
