60 Children Involved In School Bus Crash

Sixty children were involved in a crash between a school bus and a car in County Tyrone that occurred on Monday morning.

The crash happened on the Omagh Road, Drumquin and is being declared as a "major incident" by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

The NIAS said 48 people in total had been taken to hospital following the accident.

The bus was carrying secondary school pupils, three of whom were taken to hospital for further assessment. 45 others were taken to Altnagelvin and South West acute hospitals for a check-up.

The Omagh Road is closed between the junctions of Segully Road and Drumrawn Road.

Omagh SDLP councillor Dr Josephine Deehan said: "Thankfully, it appears no-one was seriously injured and that will bring great relief to the loved ones of those involved. However, this must be an extremely traumatic ordeal for everyone involved, and it will have left everyone very badly shaken.

"The incident is of great concern, and it highlights how the safety of our children is of paramount importance. We will await the outcome of the investigation to determine exactly what happened."

"I want to praise the response of emergency services, and all those involved in helping at the scene. I hope everyone makes a speedy recovery. The road where the incident occurred is a bad stretch and, while work has taken place in the area, it may be time for the necessary authorities to look at the safety of the road again."
