Four appointees to Western H&SS Council named
The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety today announced the appointment of four new members to the Western Health and Social Services Council.
The appointments are: Mr Joseph Patrick Campbell; Mr Gerard Keown; Mr William Victor McKelvey; and Mr Daniel Sutherland.
The Health and Social Services Councils were established in 1991 to represent the public interest in the health and social services.
Mr Keown, who lives in Enniskillen is a former Civil Servant, and is the owner and manager of a small Marina and Recreational Centre at Lough Erne. He is a former Chair of Life (NI) for the Enniskillen area and is currently a Governor of Omagh College of Further and Higher Education.
Retired from the NI Civil Service Mr McKelvey lives in Artigarvan, Strabane. Previously, he was a member of Antrim Towns Development Company and first Company Chair.
Living in Enniskillen Mr Sutherland is a former Managing Director of Unipork and Director of Navan at Armagh. In the past, he has been a member of various bodies, including the Department of Health and Social Services Discipline Committee and the Department of Agriculture Research Guidance Committee.
The former Head of History at St. Patrick’s High School, Mr Campbell lives in Omagh.
Mr Campbell, Mr Keown and Mr Sutherland have each been appointed for the period ending 31 May 2007 and Mr McKelvey for the period ending 31 May 2005.
The Councils are required by law to keep under review the operation of these services and to make recommendations for improvements or provide advice on their operation.
There are four Health and Social Services Councils, one for each Health and Social Services Board area. The Eastern HSS Council has 30 members; the other three Councils each have 24 members.
HSS Council members are all appointed with the approval of the Minister responsible for the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.

The health service union NIPSA has hit out at a decision to spend £30m on artwork for Northern Ireland’s hospitals. The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety has announced its intention to spend just under £3 billion on its capital projects over the next 10 years, with one per cent of that capital to be spent on artwork.
