Police Federation Chairman Retires
The Chairman of the Police Federation for Northern Ireland (PFNI) Terry Spence has announced he will retire.
Mr Spence, who has served nearly 40 years in the RUC General Council and the PSNI, made his announcement to the staff association's Central Committee earlier today.
In a statement he said: "It has been a huge privilege for me to have served alongside dedicated and brave colleagues in many difficult areas across Northern Ireland, and then having the opportunity to represent them at all levels of the Federation, culminating in my appointment as Chairman in 2006.
"It has also been an honour to have served as a trustee of our Benevolent Fund and the UK police national charity, the Police Dependents Trust.
"My chairmanship of these charities and my seat on the Northern Ireland Police Fund and the Police Rehabilitation and Retraining Trust, has allowed me to see at first hand the plight and suffering of police officers and, in particular, the families of those whose loved ones have been killed or injured in the execution of their duty."
Mr Spence's successor will be elected in February 2015.

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

House of Lords vote for ‘50/50’ police force
The House of Lords has renewed the 50/50 recruitment rule for the PSNI by a majority of 44. It puts into practice a recommendation made in 1999 by Lord Patten that the local police force should be split evenly between Catholics and Protestants. The result of the vote was 141 to 97.

Police Ombudsman’s report laid before parliament
The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Dr John Reid, has unveiled The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland’s first annual report before Parliament on Monday July 23. The report covers the Police Ombudsman office’s discharge of its functions during the first 17 months since it was established in November 2000.
