Property And Car Attacked In 'Hate Crime'
A property and a car in the Ulsterville Avenue area of south Belfast were damaged in an arson attack in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Detectives in South Belfast are appealing for information following the attack, which was reported at 03:35.
A bottle was thrown through the living room window of a house in the area and a car parked close to the house was set alight. It is believed that flammable liquid was poured over the vehicle. The car was extensively damaged, but no one was in the car at the time of the incident.
Police have said they are treating the incident as a hate crime.
SDLP South Belfast Councillor Declan Boyle said: "This was a despicable act that could have caused death, make no mistake about that. Once somebody throws flammable liquid into a home, they have no control over the circumstances.
"Our immediate thoughts are with the family targeted, it must have been an awful ordeal and we hope that they can somehow move on from this. Unfortunately, it’s not the first attack of this nature in the area and that is a worrying trend. I praise the good work of the Fire and Rescue Service and am thankful danger to life was averted."
Police have appealed for anyone with any information to contact them at Musgrave Police Station on the non emergency number 101. The independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
