Sinn Féin MLA Sue Ramsey To Step Down

Sinn Féin MLA Sue Ramsey has announced that she will step down from the Northern Ireland Assembly on 03 November.

Ms Ramsey stated that health reasons were behind her decision to give up her Stormont seat, which will be co-opted by another Sinn Féin MLA.

Speaking after the announcement, Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams said: "Sue Ramsey has made a considerable contribution to political life in the North over two decades, first as a political and community activist and then as an elected representative. I have known Sue since she was a child.

"After her election to Lisburn Council in 1997 Sue was part of the Good Friday negotiations team and was elected to represent West Belfast in the Assembly in 1998. Across a distinguished political career, Sue has made a huge impression on all of those she met and worked with.

"I am glad to call her my friend. She has a good heart and I hope her health is restored as quickly as possible. I extend best wishes to her and the Ramsey clann.

"In her role as a Spokesperson on Health she met regularly with staff and hospital unions and was a champion of the rights of patients on the Assembly's Health Committee.

"As Sinn Féin's longest serving woman in the Assembly, Sue will be missed both in the institutions but also from her role representing the people of West Belfast."
