Children In Need Referrals Rise
The number of Children in Need referrals in Northern Ireland has risen over the last number of years, according to the 'Children’s Social Care Statistics for Northern Ireland 2013/14' released by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.
As of 31 March 2014, 25,998 children in Northern Ireland were known to Social Services as a Child in Need.
Between 2012/13 and 2013/14, the number of Children in Need referrals rose by 7% to reach 40,165 referrals.
Of the children referred, a quarter had their needs met at the time of referral whereas 71% were allocated for further action, the report said.
Neglect and physical abuse were the main reasons for a child being on the Child Protection Register.

Green Party Councillor Lauren Kendall (Holywood and Clandeboye) has issued a strong condemnation against the Executive and the Minister for the Economy, stating they have failed to implement crucial Safe Leave legislation. The proposed law would provide paid leave for victims of domestic abuse.

More action needed for cross-border child protection
A report on a North/South Conference on Child Protection has called for more action to be taken. Held last September, the conference gave local professionals a chance to discuss recommendations for a common approach to all child protection systems between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

One in three children born in Northern Ireland are conceived outside of marriage, new figures have revealed. The figure was part of statistics released today on the number of births and deaths registered in Northern Ireland in 2002, according to a new survey by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency.
