Ryanair Axes L'Derry To Birmingham Route

Ryanair is reportedly planning to drop its L'Derry to Birmingham route from the City of Derry Airport.

It is understood the decision was made by the airline after it recently reviewed its winter network.

The service will officially come to an end on 20 November.

According to reports, City of Derry Airport had been in discussions with Ryanair regarding the summer schedule for 2015. It was during these discussions that it was suggested the Birmingham route would no longer operate.

However, the airline has not commented on the claims, saying it "does not comment upon or engage in rumour or speculation".

In a statement, a spokesperson for City of Derry Airport said: "This is clearly disappointing news for the airport and for those passengers that are booked onto services that will now not operate and who regularly use the route.

"We understand that the decision by Ryanair to cease services on this route is part of a wider review by the airline of their winter network where they have reduced services and frequencies on over thirty other routes."

They added: "City of Derry Airport also recognises that there is still a strong demand for a Birmingham service and is in discussions with a number of other carriers whose aircraft will potentially be better suited to service the Birmingham route."
