£4.5m Infrastructure Scheme Announced

A £4.5m sewerage infrastructure improvement project has been announced for the Holywood/Kinnegar area.

The project will include sewer laying, tunnelling work and construction of a pumping station in the area, with a majority of the work taking place in the vicinity of Kinnegar Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW). In addition, one of the main sewers being built across the A2 Belfast/Bangor Road, will be created by tunnelling in order to try and reduce disruption to traffic.

When complete, the scheme will improve the sewerage infrastructure in the Holywood and Kinnegar areas and reduce the likelihood of odour issues.

Previous investigations of the sewer network found three Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) at Jacksons Road, Strathearn Court and Palace Barracks, as well as discharge to lagoons beside the Wastewater Treatment Works, were leading to odour problems.

According to the Department of Regional Development, this project will see a new sewer and pumping station created which will allow the CSOs to be removed. The pumping station will also pump sewage flows from the adjacent MOD facility and the Belfast Harbour Estate, to Kinnegar WwTW for treatment.

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy said: "I welcome the start of this major project, which involves the construction of sewers and tunnels in the vicinity of the A2 Belfast/Bangor Road and railway line.

"The project will divert wastewater overflow discharges to a new wastewater pumping station adjacent to Kinnegar Wastewater Treatment Works, improving the overall infrastructure in the area and reducing the likelihood of odours."

Sara Venning, NI Water's Chief Executive, added: "We would like to thank the public for their patience throughout this major programme of work, and will continue to work closely with the elected representatives and stakeholders for the area.

"This project is good news, as it will improve wastewater services for our customers in the area and will reduce the risk of odours, which have been problematic in the past."

Work has now commenced on the project, and is expected to be completed by March 2016.
