L'Derry Farmer Convicted

A farmer in County L'Derry has been convicted at Magherafelt Magistrates Court on one charge of failing to keep a Herd Register.

Alex Williamson, Carhill Road, Laragh, Swatragh, pleaded guilty to the charge.

He was fined £200 plus £31 costs and £15 offender levy.

Newcastle Job Seekers Excused From Signing

Jobseekers who attend Newcastle Social Security Office (SSO) have been told that they are excused from signing on between 8 and 19 December.

The move is a result of routine maintenance to improve accessibility to the building.

Those affected have been informed of the change and have been advised that payments will be automated during this period. Normal signing and service will recommence from 2 January 2015 for Newcastle Jobseekers.

Cookstown Man Convicted Of Benefit Fraud

A man has been convicted at Magherafelt Magistrates' Court for claiming benefits he was not entitled to.

30-year-old Ryan Shirlow of Coolmount Drive, Cookstown, Country Tyrone, claimed Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £12,051 while failing to declare employment. He was given a five month prison sentence suspended for three years and ordered to pay court costs of £40.

He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Taxi Driver Disqualified For Two Years

A taxi driver from Warrenpoint in County Down has been disqualified from driving for two years and given a four month prison sentence, suspended for two years, at Banbridge Magistrates' Court.

Michael Brannigan of Seaview Heights, Ballymartin, pleaded guilty to the offences and was handed a two year driving disqualification.

He was given a four month prison sentence suspended for two years for not having insurance for hire or reward and ordered to pay court costs of £19.

Mr Brannigan was stopped on 20 February 2014 by Driver & Vehicle Agency Enforcement Officers investigating illegal taxis in the Newry area. Checks revealed that the vehicle was an unlicensed taxi, that he did not hold a taxi driver's licence or a taxi operator's licence and that he did not have insurance for hire or reward.
