Remembrance service held for Omagh bomb victims
A remembrance service was held in Omagh today to mark the fifth anniversary of the bombing of the town centre in 1998.
Over 300 people were injured and 29 people killed when in the Real IRA car bomb exploded amid Saturday afternoon shoppers on August 15.
Held in the memorial garden a short distance from where the bomb exploded, the service was attended by people from the local area as well as representatives of those who were killed from the Republic of Ireland and Spain.
NIO security minister Jane Kennedy, and Assistance Chief Constable Sam Kincaid also attended the service, the last which will officially mark the anniversary of the attack.
Speaking prior to the service the minister said that police remained “confident” that those responsible for the attack would eventually be apprehended as part of one of the largest ongoing police operations the UK.
The government recently announced that £800,000 would be provided to assist relatives of those killed in the bombing to mount a civil case against five men alleged to have been involved in carrying out the attack.
To date only one person has been sentenced in connection with the bombing. In January 2002, Colm Murphy was jailed for 14 years in connection with charges relating to plotting the bomb attack.
Last week, the Special Criminal Court in Dublin sentenced the alleged leader of the Real IRA Michael McKevitt to 20 years in prison for directing terrorism in the period after the Omagh atrocity.

House Damaged In Petrol Bomb attack
A house in Larne has been damaged in a petrol bomb attack, according to police. It happened on Church Way at around 10.30pm on Wednesday. A man was in the house at the time but was unhurt. Minor damage was caused to the property and a window was smashed. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Four People Released Over Under-Car Bomb Attack In L'Derry
Four people arrested over an attempted under-car bomb attack on a police officer have been released unconditionally. The device was placed under a car in Eglinton, L'Derry, on 18 June 2015. Three men, aged 29, 38 and 46, and a 32-year-old woman were arrested in Belfast, L'Derry an Pomeroy, however they have since been released.
