Record Number Of People Living With Cancer

There are record number of people living with cancer in Northern Ireland, new research has found.

The statistics, released by Macmillan Cancer Support, reveal that around 63,000 are now living with the disease in NI.

Around 10,000 more people having been living with cancer since 2010.

This is an 18% increase over the last five years, the charity added.

It is understood the increase is because of improvements made in survival and detection of the disease, as well as a growing and ageing population.

Macmillan has said that many people diagnosed with cancer will need specialist support in order to cope with the long-term impact of cancer and its treatment. This can range from physical side effects, such as chronic fatigue, to psychological problems.

It is understood the charity is now working with agencies in the region to remodel the traditional model of 'one size fits all', to provide individual, tailored care for patients.

Heather Monteverde, Macmillan Cancer Support's general manager in Northern Ireland, is quoted as saying: "Without a complete transformation of the way people are supported after their treatment ends, there is no way patients will get the after-care they so desperately need, whether that's practical help at home, financial advice, or even emotional support.

"Our existing health and social care structures were not set up to deal with the needs of such a huge number of people who have survived cancer, but who often continue to require considerable support."
