Community groups get further £3.5m funding
Community groups in Northern Ireland are set to benefit from a further £3.5 million in funding, it was announced today.
The funding will be used for programmes in local communities that foster a better understanding of and respect for neighbouring traditions.
Announcing the next three year round of the Community Relations Core Funding Scheme, Minister Jane Kennedy said the Scheme was designed to build on the success of the previous rounds and attract voluntary organisation in an even more stategic, focused approach to the development of community relations among young people in Northern Ireland.
She added: "Much good work is being done by voluntary organisations in local communities and in making available a further three years of core funding I am confident that this support will have a very positive impact at local community level.
“Currently the Department funds some 36 organisations which deliver community relations programmes for young people in their local communities. We need to build on this approach and enable voluntary organisations to develop programmes that are even more focused on local needs.”
To ensure that the decision-making process of the Scheme is open and transparent the Minister confirmed that an Advisory Group, made up of recognised experts in the education, youth and community relations sectors, will be appointed to advise on the applications.
Voluntary organisations currently in receipt of funding will be issued with application forms.
