Number Of People Unemployed In NI Falls

The number of people unemployed in Northern Ireland has fallen for the second consecutive year.

Newly-published figures by the Department of Trade and Enterprise revealed that in December 2014, the number of people claiming unemployment benefit in NI fell by 900 from the previous month, and now stands at 50,200. This compares to December 2012, when the number of people claiming unemployment benefit was just under 65,000.

Over the last two years, the number of those unemployed has fallen each month.

However, the 1.8% decrease in claimants was still lower than the UK average of 3.3%. In fact, the annual decrease in Northern Ireland was the lowest of the 12 UK regions.

According to the latest Labour Force Survey, the unemployment rate for NI was 5.8% for the period between September and November 2014, the same as the UK average. The report showed that there were 817,000 people in employment for the three-month period, and the corresponding working age employment rate was around 67.8%.
