Manannán Mac Lir Statue Found By Ramblers

A group of ramblers have found the statue of Celtic sea god Manannán Mac Lir, which was removed from its mount on Binevenagh Mountain near Limavady.

It is understood that having spotted what they thought was the statue, laying in rocks some 70 metres below the cliff top, the walkers informed members of the Royal Irish Regiment, who informed the police.

The statue is said to have been found some 300 metres from its original mount, with reports suggesting that whoever removed the statue has tried to carry it back down the mountain, but ended up throwing it over the cliff.

Police have inspected the statue and said the back of its head is damaged, the extent of which will need to be determined by a sculptor.

Police said they were pleased the sculpture had been located and renewed their appeal for information on who removed it from its mount.
