UU Bill Seeks To End Naming Of Facilities After Terrorists

MLA Tom Elliott is to launch a private members bill calling for legislation that would prevent public facilities being named after convicted terrorists.

The Ulster Unionist's (UU) Bill, which also includes anyone convicted of membership of a proscribed organisation, comes after a dispute over a children's park in Newry Co Down named in 2001 after IRA hunger striker Raymond McCreesh.

Newry and Mourne councillors voted last month to retain the name, despite objections. Another vote is due to be held tonight.

Mr Elliot claims the naming of public facilities after convicted terrorists only serves to "polarise and divide communities".

"There is currently no legislation in place to restrict this happening and the recent furore which has centred on the naming of a children's play park in Newry after the convicted IRA terrorist Raymond McCreesh is concrete proof that such legislation is required," Mr Elliot said.
