Snow Causes Chaos Throughout NI

Snow fall overnight and into Monday morning is causing chaos throughout Northern Ireland.

The Met Office has said a yellow weather warning is now in place for the region, and affects all counties. The forecaster said snow is expected to fall to lower levels in NI, with localised accumulations of 2cm to 6cm, while up to 10cm of snow could be expected on higher ground.

The conditions have caused hazardous driving conditions and Traffic Watch NI has advised motorists to take care on the roads. A number of accidents have already been reported due to the weather. On the A1, between Dromore and Banbridge, two vehicles crashed following heavy snowfall. Accidents were also reported near Dundonald and Holywood, while the Slievenaboley Road, between Dromara and Moneyslane, is currently closed due to a jack-knifed lorry.

In a statement, the Department for Regional Development said: "Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution when travelling, particularly when driving on untreated roads.

"Snowing very heavily across the whole province this morning. If travelling PLEASE SLOW down and drive with extreme caution."

Elsewhere, Markethill Primary School and Markethill High School in Co Armagh have been closed, with some schools in L'Derry also closed.
