Bin Lorry Drivers To Strike Over Pay Cut
GMB members, employed as bin lorry drivers for Barking & Dagenham Council Environmental Services, have voted to strike over a £1,000 a year pay cut. The ballot produced a 90% turnout.
Keith Williams, GMB Senior Organiser, said: "There is clearly something wrong when Barking & Dagenham council is cutting the pay of front-line service workers and increasing the wage bill with the introduction of new high level posts, and at the same time compromising health & safety.
"There is no doubt at all that residents need a well-functioning refuse/cleansing service but there is a question as to whether residents will benefit from any of these expensive new jobs.
"The council is forcing the bin lorry drivers to defend their existing pay and working conditions against an unproven attack to the point when they have to consider strike action to keep what they already have.
"GMB is calling on the council to reconsider the need for the expensive, invisible new posts and halt the attack on council employees who work on the roads delivering invaluable services to residents."

Almost 300 male council workers in England have succeeded in a "landmark" sex discrimination ruling yesterday. More than 12,000 men in low-paid jobs could now bring equal pay claims, after the test case in which 300 men working as care assistants, caretakers, drivers and leisure attendants lodged complaints against three English councils.

Irish Workers Would Take Pay Cut For Dream Job
A recent survey has revealed the vast majority of Irish workers would take a salary cut if it meant getting their dream job. The survey of over 20,000 people found 84% believe a fulfilling career is more important than money amid ongoing turmoil with the government, unions and employers locked in the latest round of national pay talks.

Police Forces Support Improved Pay Offer
Members of Unite the union, working for police forces in England and Wales have backed an improved pay offer in a ballot, it has been announced. Civilian staff, including 999 call handlers, scene of crime officers, police community support officers and custody officers, accepted the revised pay offer of 2.2%, or £400, whichever is greater, by 92%.
