Employment And Learning Minister Attends 'Women In STEM' Event

Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry has addressed an event hosted by Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (SEMTA) NI to celebrate the success of the 'Women in STEM, Addressing the Gender Balance' programme.

The 'Women in STEM, Addressing the Gender Balance' initiative is funded by the Department for Employment and Learning and delivered by SEMTA NI, the Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies.

Dr Farry said: “My Department has led on the production and implementation of the STEM Strategy, 'Success through STEM', which has been endorsed by the Executive. The Strategy aims to encourage more of our young people, particularly females, to study and pursue a career in STEM.

"The workforce of the future will be strongly reliant on STEM skills to meet the demands of a growing economy and it is increasingly important that more young people are encouraged to study STEM subjects. I would specifically urge young females to consider studying STEM subjects in school and pursue careers in STEM.

"If we fail to inspire our young females, we are cutting ourselves off from an enormous pool of potential talent. There is no doubt STEM skills will continue to be highly sought after in the future and that is why I support this important initiative."
