Shopping Footfall Improves
Shopper numbers in Northern Ireland were up 1.3% in February when compared to a year ago and up on the 2.4% fall in January this year, according to the Northern Ireland Retail Consortium (NIRC).
The figures show that Northern Ireland is faring well when compared with the UK as a whole, which saw a 0.5% drop in footfall on a year ago.
Shopping centres across the UK reported the largest decline, falling 1.5%, while high streets experienced a 0.6% decline in footfall, although this was up on the 1.6% fall in January
Four regions and countries reported footfall lower than a year ago, with Wales and Greater London reporting the greatest declines
Aodhán Connolly, NIRC Director said: "The resumption of growth in shopper footfall last month is good news especially after a dip in footfall in January, while across the UK as a whole the figures are less rosy.
"The challenge as ever for retailers is to try and convert that growth in shoppers into an improved performance at the tills. This requires a keen blend of customer service, price and attractive and welcoming outlets and shopping destinations. The latter requires substantial capital investment, and policy makers can assist by making it easier and less costly to invest in new and refurbished stores, for example by fundamentally reforming the business rates system. With proper support from government at all levels, retail as a sector can grow its investment in jobs, in our economy and in our communities."
