Health Minister Welcomes UK Wide Foster Campaign

The Health Minister has welcomed the promotion of a UK wide foster care campaign 'Foster Care Fortnight'.

The movement will raise awareness of foster care and the need for more carers.

It is understood there are approximately 2,857 children in care in Northern Ireland, with 76% living with foster/kinship care families.

Health Minister Simon Hamilton stated he is "delighted" to add his support to the campaign.

He said: "There are some children who, for various reasons, cannot be cared for at home and we must ensure they are offered stability and permanence in other ways. Foster care, including care in kinship settings, is a vitally important alternative.

"It is estimated that we need around three new foster carers every week to meet the needs of children and young people coming into the care system.

"This is why Foster Care Fortnight is vitally important to help promote fostering."
