Minister Visits Sheltered Housing Project In Ballymoney

Representatives from NI housing association Oaklee Trinity welcomed the Social Development Minister to an open day at its sheltered housing project in Ballymoney, Co Antrim.

Shiels Court, on Ballymoney’s Castle Street, consists of 36 flats where older tenants can enjoy an independent lifestyle in the knowledge that support is available onsite.

Minister Mervyn Storey said: "This style of housing is an excellent way to support the independence of older people in a safe and secure environment. The accommodation is of a high quality and tenants are safe in the knowledge that support is available should they need it."

Timothy Quin, Chairman of OakleeTrinity said: "OakleeTrinity welcomes the Minister for Social Development, Mr Mervyn Storey, to Shiels Court. OakleeTrinity have over 35 years experience providing housing and support services for older people, such as here at Shiels Court which is a showcase of our work in providing residents with a safe and secure environment right in the heart of Ballymoney town."

Man Convicted Of Benefit Fraud

A man has been convicted of claiming benefits he was not entitled.

Gregory Young, 34, of Mount Eden, Limavady claimed Housing Benefit totalling £13,873 while failing to declare he was living with his partner. He was given 160 hours community service.

He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Alliance Supports 'Buddy Up!' Scheme

Alliance OFMDFM spokesperson, Chris Lyttle MLA, has sponsored the official launch of 'Buddy Up!', a free reconciliation and education resource for nursery and primary schools in Northern Ireland.

'Buddy Up!' is a creative, simple way for schools, children, families and groups to meet across the traditional divides, as they learn, play and share stories with each other. The scheme was originally run by Community Relations In School (CRIS) with Holy Cross Nursery School and Edenderry Nursery School in Belfast, and is now being rolled out in schools across Northern Ireland.

MrLyttle MLA said: "I believe the single biggest challenge we face to achieve our potential in education, economic growth and societal well-being is to tackle division and build a united community."

Crumlin Social Housing Scheme Opened
A new social housing scheme of three and four bedroom houses has been officially opened in Crumlin. The fourteen new homes for families on the social housing waiting list, is owned and managed by Habinteg Housing Association who funded the build, with support from the Department for Social Development.
