Call For Urgent Review Of Online Safety Law In NI
The SDLP is calling for an urgent review of online safety law in Northern Ireland following the tragic death of Ronan Hughes.
Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone said he was moved after hearing the comments of Ronan's parents, Gerard and Theresa.
Mr McGlone said the family had been "very badly let down" after trying to report the issue to the police.
He said: "The strength they have shown by speaking about their experience so soon after this tragedy is immense and it's important that we help them, and other families in a similar position, through this period.
"It is incumbent on all of us to do what we can to protect young people from the dangers of online predators who seek to exploit them. I take that duty very seriously and that’s why I'm calling for an urgent review of online safety law in Northern Ireland with a view to introducing new cyber safety regulations."
Mr McGlone will also be requesting a meeting with the Justice Minister and the PSNI Cyber Crime unit to pursue the matter further.
He continued: "In the Assembly the SDLP is proposing a motion calling for a training programme on internet safety to be rolled out across schools, libraries and colleges for parents, teachers and children. Greater knowledge is key to tackling this threat."
