Health Minister announces £26m ICT investment
Health Minister, Angela Smith today announced a £26.7 million investment in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for the Health and Personal Social Services (HPSS).
The initiative will give every person in Northern Ireland a new ten digit Health & Care Number and provide data communications services linking every General Practitioner Practice with other health and social care organisations.
Announcing the news, the Minister said: “This is the most significant Information Communication Technology investment for health and care to date in Northern Ireland which will enable the development of a secure and reliable means of electronic communication between GP practices, hospitals and other health and social care organisations.
"It will also facilitate improved sharing of information across the service, thus bringing the Health and Personal Social Services in Northern Ireland in line with similar developments already underway in other parts of the UK."
The first installations will commence in January 2004 with early phases of the Health & Care Number implementation programme focussing on establishing the central hardware configuration to support the new number and associated services.
Ten GP practices and one Trust will quality assure the new processes in the spring of 2004 before the regional rollout programme begins.
The rollout of the new system across the HPSS is expected to take three years.
