Co Antrim Security Alert Declared 'Elaborate Hoax'

A security alert in County Antrim has been declared an elaborate hoax by the police.

Part of the M5 and A2 roads were closed after a suspicious object was found in Abbeydale Close on Tuesday morning.

The Shore Road was closed between Station Road and Hazelbank and the M5 were closed country-bound. They have now been re-opened.

Public transport was also affected.

The object has been removed for forensic testing.

Chief Inspector Stephen Reid said: "I would like to thank the local people who have been inconvenienced by this operation for their patience and understanding while police conducted the clearance.

"I would also wish to thank our partner agencies who assisted with diversions and kept vehicular traffic flowing throughout the incident.

"I would appeal to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area recently or who has any information which may help police with our enquiries to contact officers at Newtownabbey or detectives in Antrim on 101."
