SDLP Hits Out Over Plans To Remove Working Tax Credits

Government plans to abolish working tax credits have been slammed by the SDLP.

Social Development Spokesperson Dolores Kelly MLA said this is the most "devastating attack" on working people.

She said: "The removal of Working Tax Credits represents the worst that the Chancellor has yet unleashed in his efforts to prove that he is more Tory than the other Conservative leadership hopefuls. Indeed his party colleagues are chomping at the bit to prove their credentials like Theresa May with her disingenuous comments about immigration."

Construction Work To Start On Co Armagh Road Scheme

Construction work on a £40,000 road improvement project in Co Armagh is to start on Monday, 19 October.

The scheme, on the B78 Mullurg Road, at its junction with the A51 Armagh to Tandragee Road, aims to improve forward visibility on the approach to this junction.

Work is due to be carried out over the next four weeks subject to weather conditions and it is necessary to close the road for the first week of the works in order to carry out the works safely.

Diversions will be put in place.

Woman Convicted Of Benefit Fraud

A woman has convicted for claiming benefits she was not entitled to at Belfast Magistrates' Court.

Megan Rice claimed Income Support totalling £2,707 while failing to declare employment. She was given 75 hours community service.

She is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Woman Killed In Co Armagh Road Collision
A woman in her 30s has been killed in a road crash in Portadown, Co Armagh. The woman was hit by a car as she was walking on the side of the Moy Road at around 9.45pm on Tuesday. The road was closed for a short time but it has been reopened. Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.

Communities Minister Sends Joint Letter Over UC Cut
Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey has joined her Scottish and Welsh counterparts by sending a written letter to Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Thérèse Coffey after Westminster confirmed it is to withdraw the £20 uplift to Universal Credit.
