Local nurses leading the way says report
Northern Ireland’s nurses and midwifes have risen to the challenge of modernising health and social services and are leading the way with a number of major healthcare achievements over the last four years.
This is according to achievements outlined in the ‘Valuing Diversity – A Way Forward Summary of Achievements 1998 – 2002’ report, launched by Chief Nursing Officer, Judith Hill.
Among the major achievements reached by local nurses and midwives include:
“The examples of progress outlined in the report, demonstrate the innovative and creative approach taken by staff in the HPSS, supported by the education institutions to develop services to meet the health and care challenges of the people of Northern Ireland.
‘Valuing Diversity – A Way Forward Summary of Achievements 1998 – 2002’ follows on from a strategy for nursing, midwifery and health visiting entitled ‘Valuing Diversity… A Way Forward’ published in 1998.

- the participation of NI nurses in unique leadership programmes to take forward the modernising of the health and social services
- new ground breaking roles developed
- The creation of new services developed in partnership with local communities

£2.1m Invested In Health Service Education And Training
Funding of £2.1 million is to be invested in education and training to boost the health service workforce, Health Minister Robin Swann has announced. The package includes 1,335 nursing and midwifery university places for 2022/23, as well as additional medical specialty and Allied Health Profession (AHP) training posts.

Overseas nurses recruited to fill NI shortfall
The Royal College of Nursing has said that the shortage of nurses in Northern Ireland hospitals has forced health officials to try to recruit staff from abroad. Latest figures from the College revealed that one in every 16 nurses in the province is from outside the British Isles.

PHA And CDHN Launch Programme To Tackle Health Inequalities
The Public Health Agency (PHA) is encouraging community and voluntary organisations across Northern Ireland to apply for its Elevate Mentoring and Grants programme, designed to help tackle health inequalities at a local level. The programme, coordinated by the Community Development and Health Network (CDHN), is now open for applications.
