Lisburn Firm Fined For Exposing Employees To Asbestos
Digital Fire and Security (NI) Limited in Lisburn has been fined for failing to protect employees from exposure to asbestos.
The firm was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay costs of £800.
The case arose following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) investigation into an incident in November 2013 when Digital Fire and Security (NI) Limited were contracted to install a new fire alarm system at premises on Moneymore Road, Cookstown.
HSENI's investigation found that there was no asbestos management plan for the premises and that Digital Fire and Security (NI) Limited had failed to request a copy of such a plan prior to the commencement of their work.
Digital Fire and Security (NI) Limited commenced work on the alarm installation without knowledge of the location, type and condition of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) within the premises. While undertaking the work, two Digital Fire and Security (NI) Limited employees cut through an asbestos insulation board ceiling and as a result were exposed to asbestos.

Additional Funding Needed To Improve Stroke Services In NI
Northern Ireland's stroke service will need additional funding to meet all priorities, Health Minister Robin Swann has said. Speaking at the first meeting of the All Party Group on Stroke today, Minister Swann said: "When publishing the Action Plan in June 2022, I was clear that we can – and must – do better for stroke patients and carers.

NI Man Jailed For Use Of Criminal Encrypted Communication Channel
A 44-year-old man has been sentenced to a total of 12 years for offences linked to EncroChat – an encrypted communication channel used by criminals. Michael O'Loughlin was arrested in 2020 following the search of a property as part of Operation Venetic, a UK wide operation by the National Crime Agency (NCA) designed to "dismantle EncroChat".

Man Extradited From Poland To Stand Trial In NI
A 41-year-old man has been extradited from Poland to Northern Ireland to stand trial for a number of offences, including the cultivation of cannabis. According to the PSNI, the man is accused of committing a number of offences in the Maghera, Coleraine and Kilrea areas in October 2019.
