Call For QUB To Divest From Fossil Fuel Firms

Queens University Belfast (QUB) is being called to divest from fossil fuel firms.

Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard made the call in support of the student occupation of the QUB administration block.

Queen's currently invests £5.5m into fossil fuel companies despite having an ethical investment policy.

Mr Hazzard said: "Over the last year the university has refused to engaged constructively with the campaign despite the submission to them of a 47-page academic report outlining the case for fossil fuel divestment.

"This campaign has been given a decisive mandate from staff and students as well as support from trade unions, charities, NGOs, community groups and political parties across the spectrum.

"The university should review their investment policy immediately and become more ethical in its investments which 83% of students and staff voted for.

"The university needs to act responsibly in regards to this protest and allow access to food and other necessities to the protesters. I believe this protest can be resolved with a declaration of intent on behalf of the university."
