Minister targets 100% NI broadband capability

The Government’s vision is for Northern Ireland to be the leading broadband region in the UK and the first region to have 100% broadband availability, Enterprise Minister, Ian Pearson, said today.

The Minister made his remarks in the opening address at the Broadband NI Conference – Connecting Commerce, Creativity and Community’ in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast where he launched a new publication, ‘Broadband Northern Ireland – Fully Connected’ which details Government’s vision for telecommunications and sets out challenging targets for the next three years.

He said: “Currently approximately 65% of households and businesses in Northern Ireland have access to broadband, mainly in the Greater Belfast and Londonderry areas, and a growing number of our rural towns. In comparison, across the UK the figure is now over 75%. Clearly we have work to do if businesses across Northern Ireland are to have cost effective access to broadband, irrespective of their location.

“Equitable access was very much the focus of the Tender I issued in July this year. This tender offers Northern Ireland the real opportunity to be the first region in the UK to have 100% broadband availability."

The Minister also confirmed there would be the aggregation of the public sector’s demand for broadband services and the re-opening of the UK Broadband Fund in Northern Ireland.
