Minister sinks teeth into new initiative
Health Minister, Angela Smith today launched a new initiative to help improve children’s dental health in the inner city areas of south and east Belfast.
'Handel’s Fun Pack for Healthy Teeth’ project aims to promote dental care for parents and children in the area. Four thousand packs have already been distribute to families with pre-school children.
Speaking at today’s launch, the Minister said: “Although there has been a gradual improvement in oral health over the past 10 years, the most recent surveys show that the general level of oral health here is considerably worse than in Britain and the rest of Ireland particularly amongst children.
“This is most unfortunate since the disease is largely preventable. By encouraging parents to teach their children about the importance of looking after their teeth, including proper tooth brushing, regular dental check ups and eating a sensible diet including limiting the intake of sugary foods and drinks, we can greatly improve oral health and reduce the miseries of pain, infection and suffering caused by tooth decay.”
The 'Handel’s Fun Pack for Healthy Teeth’ pack is based around a character called Handel and includes three books, colouring in sheets, toothbrushing charts, smile greeting cards and stickers for children as well as leaflets for parents and a toothbrush and toothpaste.
Apart from the theme of having healthy teeth the Fun Pack also contributes to other Sure Start targets, in particular the promotion of reading and early maths skills.
